- July 02, 2008Nikon has today announced the D700 digital SLR camera. Featuring the 'full frame' FX type CMOS sensor, the D700 fits between the top-of-the-range Nikon D3 and the Nikon D300 cameras.
Key Features:
- 12.1 megapixel 'FX' format CMOS sensor
- Expeed image processor
- Up to ISO 6400
- Scene recognition system
- 51-point auto-focus system with 15 cross-type sensors
- 5fps continuous burst or 8fps with the multi-battery pack
- 0.12sec start-up time
- 40ms shutter release lag (CIPA standard)
It's a beauty, and will certainly provide competition for the aging Canon EOS 5D.
The camera will be officially available as body only with RRP of $3999. Stock is expected by the end of July, though this will be initially limited.
Please note also, that the FX format sensor means limited functionality with existing DX-type Nikon lenses. The effective resolution of the camera will be dropped to around 5 megapixels due to sensor cropping.

- June 22, 2008With Canon's EOS 400D still riding high on the popularity charts it would seem a strange time to announce a replacement, but that is what the 1000D is.
The Canon EOS 1000D improves on it's predecessor in a couple of key areas. Most noteably, the new model will feature 'Live View' mode, which allows the LCD screen to be used for composition, making this camera the first entry-level digital SLR do to so.
Resolution is also maintained at just over 10 megapixels (consistent with the EOS 400D, Nikon D40/D40X, and Pentax K200D), and the media is [finally] swapped from Compact Flash cards to the smaller SD/SDHC.
The EOS 1000D is further reduced in mass from 510g (EOS 400D) to just 450g, and this is perhaps one area of concern. The only complaint ever heard of Canon's entry-level digital SLRs are that they are perhaps too small, making them fiddly to use for anyone with even average-sized hands. We recommend giving one a test-drive if this may be an issue for you.
