- November 19, 2025Though this camera was announced some time ago, we've received notification that a new, high-end compact digital camera from Sigma will reach Australia in the next few weeks.
The camera utilises the same Foveon X3 (14MP) sensor as the acclaimed Sigma SD-14 digital SLR, making it the first compact camera to include such a large sensor. This is considered by many to be the key differentiator between compact and SLR digital cameras - the DP-1 attempts bridge this gap.
The camera also sports a 16.6mm f4 (equivalent to 28mm on a 35mm camera) wide-angle lens and 2.5-inch LCD screen.
The camera will retail for around AU$990.
More information on this product as it becomes available.

- November 19, 2025Pentax have announced a new 18-250mm DA lens available separately or in kit combination with the K10D.
The lens is priced at $729 on its own or $1649 in combination with the K10D digital SLR.
The lens follows Canon and Nikon's releases of similar broad-range 'utility' lenses, but uses the built-in image stabilisation of the Pentax K10D to keep the cost (and weight) down.

I've been trying to find the answer to a question posed by a customer recently, but have so far not been able.
Whenever this person takes a long exposure shot (which he is inclined to do regularly as he's an astronomer) the camera seems to take an equal amount of time to process and write the image to memory as the exposure time. I.e. a 3-minute exposure takes a total of 6 minutes to take; a 15-minute exposure takes 30 minutes; etc.
Writing to the memory card takes a fraction of a second (there is still only a sensor's worth of information to write, right?), so what's causing the extra delay?
My theory is that the camera uses a second shot of equal duration, but with the shutter closed, to apply a fixed-pattern noise reduction filter to the final image. This works by creating what should be a blank, black image to identify any noise artefacts, which are then subtracted from the final image.
He first noticed this on a Panasonic compact camera, but the same occurs on his new Pentax K10D

- November 19, 2025We have it on good authority that the Olympus PT-033 underwater housing is to be discontinued. This housing is suitable for the Olympus mju 720/725, which are already waterproof themselves, and extends their depth-range to 40m.
We are expecting our last delivery in the next few days and we do have some spare stock from that. Once it's gone, however, it's gone forever.

The camera will be built on a weather-proofed full-metal body.
