The Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Series Lens is a high-performance lens designed for full-frame cameras. With a fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 and a focal length of 40mm, this lens is perfect for a wide range of photography genres, including portraits, street photography, and low-light situations.

The lens incorporates three FLD elements and three SLD elements, which work together to minimize chromatic aberrations and ensure exceptional image quality. The aspherical element further helps to reduce distortion and enhance overall sharpness.

Featuring a super multi-layer coating, the lens effectively reduces flare and ghosting, resulting in excellent contrast and color accuracy in your images.

The lens is equipped with a hyper sonic AF motor (HSM), providing fast, accurate, and silent autofocus performance. It also has a manual override option, allowing you to make quick adjustments to focus manually if needed.

With its weather-sealed construction, the lens can withstand challenging shooting conditions, ensuring its durability and reliability. The front of the lens has a protective coating, making it resistant to water and oil.

The lens has a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, which produces a smooth and pleasing bokeh, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your images.

The Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Series Lens is also compatible with the Sigma USB Dock, which allows you to update the lens firmware and customize various settings.

Product Features in Detail

Exceptional quality is the natural instinct of creators. An evolution of the Art line is driven by this desire.
Inherits the development philosophybehind the SIGMA CINE LENS
High-end cine lenses used by professional filmmakers are required to have a consistent characteristic over the entire sensor at a high level, because these lenses are used to film a subject moving freely on the screen or while panning or tilting the camera. This represents exactly the concept of the Art Line; “optical performance comes first”, and the high-end cine lenses need to be designed with this idea. The SIGMA 40mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art is SIGMA’s first lens developed originally to live up to the sought-after angle of view and performance standard for a cine lens. This new perspective to ensure the quality of professional equipment for visual production empowers it to breakthrough also as an interchangeable photographic lens.

Optical performance that meets the requirements of high-end cine lenses
This lens effectively arranges three FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements to correct axial chromatic aberration and magnification chromatic aberration to the limit. A sharp image is formed on the focal plane with the maximum aperture and contrast with the soft bokeh in the out of focus area highlights the solidity of a subject. With a distortion of 1% or below and a sagittal coma flare corrected to the limit, it demonstrates a consistent optical characteristic over the entire sensor. This is the ultimate large-diameter standard lens that has both 8K-compatible resolution and beautiful bokeh.

Designed to meet all shooting conditions
The water- and oil-repellent coating on the front lens element, together with the dust and splash resistant structure*, ensures excellent performance even in the most challenging shooting conditions. The high-speed AF, thanks to the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) with an updated algorithm, captures instantaneous photography movement.

Water- and oil-repellent coating
The front lens element incorporates a water and oil-repellent coating that allows water to be wiped away easily and prevents oil and fat from sticking to the surface, even in challenging shooting conditions. At the same time, the maintenance of the lens surface becomes easier.

Dust and Splash Resistant Structure*
This lens features a highly effective dust and splash resistant structure* with special sealing at the mount connection, manual focus ring, zoom ring, and cover connection, allowing photographers to work in all types of weather.
* Although this construction allows the lens to be used in light rain, it is not the same as being waterproof.

High-speed AF
The high-speed AF, thanks to the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) with an updated algorithm, captures instantaneous photography movement.

Hood with lock
Features a hood with lock to prevent dropping the hood.

Inheriting the high standard and superior optical performance of SIGMA’s Art lenses
The optical design of SIGMA’s Art line is adopted and extended to “SIGMA CINE LENS” to achieve professional equipment for video production, which have been used in various filming situations. Thanks to its superior optical performance, the lenses can accommodate 50 million pixels and above in full-frame still cameras and meet the high-resolution requirements of leading edge 8K video technology. As high-end cine lenses, SIGMA offers 10 prime lenses, ranging from 14mm to 135mm, compatible with 35mm full-frame models, under FF High Speed Prime Line. SIGMA also provides one zoom lens in the FF Zoom Line, and two zoom lenses compatible with super 35 in the High Speed Zoom Line.

Compatible with Canon Lens Aberration Correction
The Canon mount version of this lens is compatible with the Canon Lens Aberration Correction function.* Matching the optical characteristics of the lens, this function performs in-camera corrections of peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, distortion, and more, to further enhance image quality.
* Function not available on all Canon cameras. Available corrections may vary depending on the Canon camera model.

Designed to minimize flare and ghosting
From an early stage in the lens design process, flare and ghosting have been measured to establish an optical design resistant to strong incident light sources such as backlighting. SIGMA’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting to help photographers produce sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.

High-precision, rugged brass bayonet mount
The brass mount combines high precision with rugged construction. Its treated surfaces and enhanced strength contribute to the exceptional durability of the lens.

Nikon electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism included
The Nikon mount version of this lens includes an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism that allows it to receive the appropriate signals from the camera body. This feature ensures precision diaphragm control and stable Auto Exposure (AE) performance during continuous shooting.

Rounded diaphragm
The 9-blade rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur in the out-of-focus areas of the image.

Compatible with full-frame Sony E-mount cameras
The version of this lens compatible with Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras contains the same optical system as for SLRs. SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 is not required, as the lens performs the same functions as the converter, including in-camera image stabilization and in-camera lens aberration correction. In addition, the lens is compatible with Sony’s Continuous AF, which is not addressed by MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11.
* This product is developed, manufactured and sold based on the specifications of E-mount which was disclosed by Sony Corporation under the license agreement with Sony
