The Laowa 6mm f/2 Zero-D for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) is a remarkable ultra-wide prime that breaks the mold for crop-sensor optics. Providing a 12mm full-frame equivalent focal length, it is currently one of the widest rectilinear lenses available for the MFT system. As part of the prestigious Zero-D series, it is engineered to deliver a massive 121.9° angle of view with "Close-to-Zero" distortion—meaning straight architectural lines stay straight, significantly reducing the need for software correction.
Despite its professional-grade optics, the lens is incredibly compact, weighing only 188g (6.6 oz). It features a bright f/2 maximum aperture, making it a powerhouse for astrophotography and low-light interiors. Notably, it includes electronic contacts, allowing you to control the aperture through the camera body and ensuring all EXIF data is recorded—a rare and welcome convenience for a manual focus lens.
Product Features in Detail
Rectilinear Precision (Zero-D)
Most ultra-wide lenses suffer from "fisheye" curving at the edges. The Laowa 6mm uses a rectilinear design to ensure that the vertical and horizontal lines of buildings and horizons remain perfectly straight. This makes it an essential tool for high-end real estate and architectural photography.
Astrophotography & Low Light
The fast f/2 aperture is a game-changer for MFT users. It allows you to capture the Milky Way or dim indoor venues without needing to push your ISO to levels that introduce noise, maintaining the high image quality the MFT sensor is capable of.
The "Gimbal-Ready" Form Factor
Because this lens is so lightweight (under 200g), it is perfect for vlogging and handheld gimbal use. It doesn't strain the motors of smaller gimbals, and the 12mm equivalent field of view is wide enough to capture yourself and your surroundings with ease.
Exaggerated Close-Up Perspectives
The 3.5" minimum focus distance lets you get physically close to a subject while the 121.9° FOV swallows the entire background. This creates a high-impact, immersive "macro-wide" look that is perfect for artistic nature shots.
Standard 58mm Filter Thread
Unlike many ultra-wide lenses that require expensive, bulky square filter holders due to bulbous front elements, this lens features a standard 58mm thread. You can easily attach circular polarizers or ND filters for long-exposure landscape work.
Seamless Camera Integration
The inclusion of a CPU chip and motor means you can use the command dials on your Lumix or OM System (Olympus) camera to change the aperture. It also triggers the camera's focus magnification or "peaking" automatically when you turn the focus ring, making manual focus foolproof.
