The Laowa 14mm f/4 FF RL for Leica M-mount is an elegantly engineered ultra-wide prime that brings a massive 114° angle of view to the rangefinder ecosystem. Finished in a professional silver, this lens is an "RL" (Rectilinear) powerhouse, ensuring that straight lines—whether in a narrow European alleyway or a modern interior—remain perfectly straight. Weighing just 228g (8 oz), it maintains the compact, balanced feel that M-mount photographers expect while providing a perspective far wider than traditional rangefinder lenses.
While many ultra-wide lenses struggle with filter compatibility, the Laowa 14mm features a standard 52mm front filter thread, allowing you to use common screw-in polarizers or ND filters. It is rangefinder-coupled for classic focusing through the viewfinder from infinity down to 0.7m (2.3'). For more intimate "macro-wide" shots, the lens can focus as close as 10.6" (27cm) using Live View or an external EVF.
Product Features in Detail
Rectilinear Architectural Accuracy
By utilizing high-refractive index glass and aspherical elements, Laowa has suppressed the "bowing" effect common in wide-angle lenses. This ensures that architectural subjects are portrayed with realistic, straight lines, making it a go-to for professional real estate and cityscapes.
Rangefinder & Live View Dual-Focus
This lens provides the best of both worlds: it supports the classic rangefinder focusing experience for standard distances and offers an extended "close-focus" range down to 10.6" for cameras with Live View/EVF, allowing for high-impact foreground interest.
The "Always-On" Travel Prime
Because of its minuscule size, this lens can effectively replace a much larger wide-angle zoom in your bag. Its f/4 design allows for a slim profile that doesn't block the rangefinder viewfinder as much as larger lenses, maintaining a clearer view of your surroundings.
Standard Filter Integration
Most 14mm lenses have a bulbous front element that prohibits screw-in filters. The Laowa 14mm is flat enough to accommodate a 52mm thread, allowing landscape photographers to use polarizers to cut reflections or ND filters for long-exposure water effects.
Ergonomic Focusing Tab
The manual focus ring includes a tactile focusing tab. This is a favorite feature among M-mount shooters, as it allows you to "feel" your focus distance and adjust settings instantly without having to take your eye off the subject.
Cinematic Sunstar Aesthetic
The 5-blade aperture is a signature Laowa feature. When you stop down to f/8 or f/11, light sources are rendered as distinct 10-pointed stars, adding a professional, artistic "twinkle" to urban nightscapes and sunset photography.
