The Hoya R72 Infrared Filter is a specialized optical filter designed for photographers exploring the unique and creative world of infrared photography.
Engineered to block visible light up to 720nm, the R72 allows only infrared wavelengths to pass through, producing distinctive images with surreal tones, glowing foliage, and dramatic contrast. It is ideal for capturing artistic landscapes, architectural scenes, and experimental photography styles that go beyond the visible spectrum.
Compatible with most digital cameras (particularly those modified for infrared use) as well as infrared-sensitive film, the filter offers flexibility for both modern and traditional workflows.
Constructed from high-quality optical glass and housed in a durable aluminum filter ring, it ensures reliable performance while maintaining image clarity and structural durability.
Available in a wide range of sizes—49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, and 82mm—the Hoya R72 easily fits a variety of lenses, making it a versatile addition to any creative toolkit.
Creative, precise, and built for artistic exploration, the Hoya R72 Infrared Filter is an essential accessory for photographers looking to capture striking infrared imagery with unique visual impact.
Product Features in Detail
Hoya R72 Infrared Filter
The Hoya R72 Infrared Filters are specifically designed for infrared photography with digital cameras and infrared film. Infrared light starts in the high-red area of the visible spectrum at around 750nm and goes up beyond 1000nm. This light is not visible to the naked eye. Looking through the R72 filter it looks almost opaque because the filter is only passing light from the very high red edge of the visible spectrum and infrared light. Infrared photography yields very interesting, sometimes stunning, and creative result as object in a scene reflect infrared light differently than normal light. Due to the nature of infrared light, filter factor and exposure compensation vary widely from visible light and depends largely on lighting conditions. -Works well with digital cameras, especially mirrorless cameras or DSLRS with no IR blocking filter in front of the sensor. (Please check your camera's owners manual) -Only passes light at 720nm (high-red) and above. Gives more predictable results than filter that only pass Infrared light above 850 or 900nm. -The Hoya R72 is constructed using high-quality optical glass from Hoya mounted in a precision milled aluminum frame that provides rigidity. -Consistent quality, made in Japan -Can be paired with colored black and white contrast filters such as the R25 (red), K2 (yellow), O (orange) or other color filters to change the color rendition or contrast effects.
Infrared – the world of invisible light
The wavelengths of the visible light spectrum, i.e., what we can see with our naked eye, range from 380nm to somewhere around 740nm, and what comes directly before is ultraviolet light and directly after is infrared light, which we both cannot see.
However, not being able to see this light with our eyes doesn't mean that it does not exist. With the HOYA R72 INFRARED filter, the photographer can make it possible to see things through the infrared spectrum, providing a whole new range of options to play around with colors leading to very interesting, sometimes stunning, and definitely truly creative results.
How the R72 INFRARED filter works
The R72 INFRARED filter does not let any wavelengths before 740nm pass through, allowing only light in the high red area and infrared spectrum to enter the lens. From 760nm to 860nm, the light transmission rate is 95%.
As infrared light is exclusively in the red color spectrum, all areas in images also appear in various red tones. In order to achieve the black and white style unique to infrared photography, setting the correct white balance is vital before shifting the image to B&W in post-processing. A major difference here is that the black and white contrast differs from the typical B&W settings in the camera or through post-processing when shooting without a filter.
Advanced photographers go one step further and work with a color post-processing technique called "false colors" to achieve very unique results which are only possible with an infrared filter.
Tips for shooting
- Works well with digital cameras, especially mirrorless cameras or DSLRS with no IR blocking filter in front of the sensor. (Please check your camera's manual).
- Due to the nature of infrared light, filter factor and exposure compensation vary widely from visible light and the result depends largely on lighting conditions.
- Can be paired with colored black and white contrast filters such as the R1 Pro (Red), Y2 Pro (Yellow), YA3 Pro (Orange) or other color filters to change the color rendition or contrast effects.
