The premium wide-angle lens is constructed to expand the performance of the Fujifilm X-Trans CMOS sensor for its highest picture quality. The fast aperture of around f/1.4 – f16 and 62 mm filter thread, lets you shoot a hand-held even in low light scenes. Its autofocus would let you get the right angle of the object, plus it has 11 elements in 8 groups (includes 1 aspherical element) which generates lovely bokeh for creative images. Having a focal length like that is comparable to that of a 35mm, the lens can fit in a wide range of applications like making portraits and landscapes and especially general photography. Lens distortion has been decreased to the absolute minimum using only optical rather than digital adjustment, thereby bringing the highest possible image quality and the lens elements are treated with Fujifilm's multilayer HT-EBC (High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating) for better physical feature. The rounded seven-blade diaphragm guarantees smooth bokeh even when taking portraits or product snapshots at a medium aperture to retain exact depth-of-field.
Product Features in Detail
The Fuji X series interchangeable lens cameras with wide angle lens offers a field of view like that to a 35mm lens on a 35mm camera; it gives a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture
A combination of high quality plastics and metal has made this lens being reasonably light weight, at about 300g, whilst retaining a robust build. It balances well with the Fujifilm X-E1 body used for testing as a result.
Focusing is achieved within so the lens does not expand and the 62mm filter thread doesn't rotate, which makes this lens perfect for use with polarising or graduated filters. You can slid back the focusing ring to the camera body to employ manual focusing, showing a useful hyperfocal scale. You can make fine adjustments and preference to apply is very easy because the focus ring is well damped. Closest focus is 28cm with the macro setting incorporated on the camera body, or the camera will only focus down to 60cm.
Manual Aperture Ring
The 23mm lens has a manual aperture ring if you want to select your desired aperture just like the same case with most other Fujifilm X-series lenses. Each aperture ring has a marked full stop, but still has click stops for every intermediate 1/3 stop setting, also with an 'A' setting for automatic operation. This aperture ring only needs a gentle touch to move through the aperture range, which is great for making quick adjustments, but care may need to be taken when changing lenses, as the aperture ring is easily moved as a result. Auto focus is fast and precise, locking onto subjects quickly in good light.
Fujifilm XF Fujinon 23mm f/1.4 R Performance
Sharpness in the centre of the frame is very good at its maximum aperture, but then the clarity throughout the edges of the frame falls behind by quite a bit. Stopping down increases performance thru the frame, with sharpness to the edges of the frame that reaches pretty good levels by f/2 and peak performance being attained between f/2.8 and f/5.6, the sharpness here is very outstanding all through the frame.
Build and Ergonomics
The weight of this lens actually tells that it contains more of metal than the 27mm f/2.8 pancake lens and the overall appearance and feel of the lens actually shows it. The engraved ‘Made in Japan’ also tells it so.
Keen on details
The least working distance of around 28 cm in macro mode for 60 cm normal focusing restricts the use of this lens appropriate for close-up shots to somewhat large flowers and same-sized objects. It's not actually a macro lens, although the macro focus setting in the camera is also used.
The fast f/1.4 maximum aperture delivers loads of scope for hand-held shooting in not so bright situations, where the zoom lenses might make camera shake. It also allows objects to be secluded from disrupting backgrounds and, with the quite big sensor in Fujfilm's X-series cameras; it can generate quite nice-looking bokeh.
Fujifilm's multilayer HT-EBC
All elements of the lens are made with Fujifilm's multilayer HT-EBC (High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating) that gives enhanced toughness and guarantees a smooth spread of light through the sensor.
High Picture Quality
Lens distortion has been lessened to a complete minimum by the use of optical than that of a digital correction, thus delivering the maximum possible picture excellence. The curved seven-blade diaphragm gives smooth bokeh even when taking portraits or product photography at a medium aperture to have reasonable depth-of-field.
Perfect for Landscapes and Portraits
The FUJINON XF23mm F1.4 R has a focal length like that of a 35mm lens, and is perfect for a wide variety of applications including landscapes and portraits, as well as everyday photography. The fast maximum aperture of F/1.4 lets users to shoot hand-held even in low light conditions and attain sharp images, while also bringing attractive bokeh for creative photos.
X-Trans CMOS sensor
The FUJINON XF23mm F1.4 R offers improved resolving power that has crisp contrast to grab a maximum performance out of the highly vivid X-Trans CMOS sensor. The fast F/1.4 aperture allows the user to decrease blurring in a not so bright scene and attain stunning shallow complexity to field photography.
