- April 02, 2009I've long been of the opinion that the single biggest benefit of digital SLR cameras over their compact counterparts is the size of the sensor. The increased sensor size results in lower noise meaning better images (see our article on digital SLR sensors for more information).
A few weeks ago I speculated as to how long it would be before full-frame sensors become standard in all digital SLRs. However, over the last few weeks two compact cameras have topped our sales charts consistently - the Canon PowerShot G10 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3. We cannot get enough of these models and they are normally pre-sold long before stock arrives.
Interestingly, both of these cameras use larger-than-standard sensors. The Canon uses a 1/1.7 inch, 14.7 megapixel sensor. The Panasonic uses a 1/1.63 inch, 10.1 megapixel sensor. This is compared to a standard compact sensor size of around 1/2.2 inch and that will result in significantly improved images.
Is the megapixel race over? Is attention

- March 26, 2009Canon have announced a new digital SLR for their range, the EOS 500D. Sitting just above their 450D camera, the main new feature of the 500D is the inclusion of high-definition (HD) movie recording. Main features include:
- 15.1 mexapixel CMOS Sensor (1.6x)
- DiG!C 4 Image Processor
- Full HD Movie Recording
- Live View (with Face Detection)
- 3” LCD (high resolution)
- 100-3200 ISO (H1:6400, H2:12800)
- EOS Integrated Cleaning System
Since it's launch, the Nikon D90 has stolen the limelight based primarily on the HD movie feature, so we expect the 500D to be a welcome addition to the range for Canon enthusiasts.
The Canon 500D is expected to arrive during May and will be available in the standard kit options:
- Body only
- Single IS kit (with 18-55mm image stabilised lens)
- Twin IS kit (with 18-55mm and 55-250mm image stabilised lenses)

- March 24, 2009PLEASE NOTE: We have now sold the two units we had. Sorry if you missed out.
We have two of the original mk I version of the Canon EOS 5D to clear so we've dropped the price to just $1999.
Obviously, the EOS 5D Mk II is newer, has more features and is improved in a heap of areas, but it's also twice the price. This is a fantastic opportunity to own a brand new, full frame digital SLR for under $2000 - one that won't come around again for a while.
We really do have only 2 of these, so what are you waiting for? Please order now to avoid disappointment.

We're starting to hear rumours of additional price rises over the next 2-3 months. First to be hit is likely to be Tamron lenses, but it's unlikely that Tamron would make this move without some confidence that others will follow.
As ever, we'll try and keep you informed and provide as much notice as possible of any price rises.
