Product Features in Detail
Compact and Lightweight Super-Telephoto Lens
Don't let the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR's physical appearance fool you, it's compact, lightweight, versatile and durable for a prime lens of its kind. Phase Fresnel (PF) lens elements effectively compensate for chromatic aberration and ghosting when combined with ordinary glass lens element. It measures a compact size of 106mm x 237mm and a weight of 1,460g! Most 500mm prime lens weighs over 3,000g. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is nearly equivalent of the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR. Combined with its superior weather-resistant performance, this super-telephoto prime lens is the perfect glass to use for agile shooting reliability in various conditions whether you're shooting bird, wildlife, sports or action.
Superior Optical Performance
The PF (Phase Fresnel) element is the latest in Nikon optical design along with three ED glass elements to deliver high-resolution, high contrast images with beautiful background blur with minimal color fringing via effective chromatic aberration compensation, that is optimised for high-megapixel digital cameras. This NIKKOR prime lens is also designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, it is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length. When you use the VR SPORT mode (or when you attach a teleconverter to it), handheld vibrations are tamed by VR image stabilization equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops faster. Additionally, the Nano Crystal Coat, an anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon, virtualy eliminates internal lens element reflections. It uses ultrafine, nano-sized crystal particles to eliminate reflections, reduce ghost and flare effect under harsh lighting to create clearer images.
Dust and Drip Resistant Structure and Fluorine Coat
The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is designed with a dust- and drip-resistant structure for enhanced reliability. Its movable parts and other sections are sealed to protect the inside of the lens against dust and also water droplets. Nikon's original fluorine coat effectively repels dust or dirt. It is applied to the front lens surface to ensure high antifouling performance. It gives you the freedom to continue shooting in diverse environments and conditions may it be in a desert or locations with negative temperatures.
Faster autofocus with an improved subject-tracking performance
The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR employs a lighter focus lens group, higher AF speed is achieved to assure that you can take sharp and detailed photos with its superb subject-tracking performance. Its Vibration Reduction (VR) function provides an equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops faster in Normal mode. When you use its SPORT mode the VR is effective for shooting quickly and erratically moving subjects. Because a stable finder image can be reliably viewed even during subject tracking, the capture of images with the intended composition is enabled. Even when you're recording videos, the VR works perfectly well.
Adopted the Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism
An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting. With conventional D/G type lenses, the diaphragm blades are operated by mechanical linkage levers.
