If you've been searching for a camera that can shoot moving subjects in action at the speed of life, look no further: the Canon EOS R3 is a professional full frame mirrorless camera that’s built for high speed, high sensitivity and high reliability. From capturing the action on the sideline or trackside at a sports event, to wildlife and nature, music and reportage the EOS R3 might just be the camera you’ve been waiting for.
The EOS R3 will be designed for professional sports, news and action photographers looking for quality images, both still and moving, of objects travelling at fast speeds.
The EOS R3 is a new product series that sits between the professional 1-Series flagship models and our high-end enthusiast 5-Series cameras. The EOS R3 bridges a gap between professionals looking for a high speed, high sensitivity, and high reliability mirrorless solution, but also for amateur photographers looking for certain professional features that aren’t available in Canon 5-Series products.
Product Features in Detail
Outpace. Outperform.
Fleeting moments in time, captured on camera in ways that you never thought were possible. Welcome to the EOS R3. Our new high-performance, high-speed mirrorless camera marks a new era for sports, wildlife and news photographers, as well as creative filmmakers.
Unprecedented speed and performance from a mirrorless camera built for pros.
A camera designed to capture the fastest moving action. Designed to capture objects moving at high speed and built to meet the exacting demands of professional shooters, with ultra-responsiveness, high sensitivity, reliability and durability.
Explosive speed at 30fps.
At the heart of the EOS R3 lies a brand-new back-illuminated stacked sensor, working in concert with our world-class DIGIC X image processor. Together, they allow superb quality RAW files to be captured at a staggering 30fps, with full AF/AE tracking.
The breath-taking speed of the camera’s new sensor also redefines what can be done with an electronic shutter. Flash sync is possible when using external Speedlites, and the distortion of fast-moving subjects is virtually eliminated.
Mastering movement.
The EOS R3’s ability to follow moving objects around the frame, keeping them in pin-sharp focus, is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Even when shooting RAW file at 30fps our next-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF tracks subjects reliably and confidently.
We’ve taken object-tracking capabilities to new heights. Alongside the people and animal AF tracking modes (including birds) found in our EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras, the EOS R3 also tracks racing cars and motorbikes – perfect for motorsports shooters.
And when conditions get tough, the camera can now focus in extreme levels of darkness: at light levels of -7 EV or lower.
See. React. Respond.
Ever used a camera so advanced it feels like it’s reading your mind? With our unique Eye Control autofocus technology, the EOS R3 focuses wherever you are looking. This unparalleled control over AF allows the camera to react as quickly as you do – responding fast to ever-changing scenes.
In low light, the EOS R3 offers up to eight stops of protection against camera shake thanks to our revolutionary Image Stabilizer (IS) technology. The camera’s own sensor-shift IS works in tandem with the optical IS built into many RF mount lenses, for a result that lets you shoot handheld in very dim light or while using long shutter speeds to intentionally blur movement.
Made for the movies.
The EOS R3 is just at home capturing cinematic video as it is still photography. Bristling with features that empower filmmakers to new levels of creativity, the camera can capture oversampled 4K or RAW video footage internally to a CFexpress card. Canon Log 3 provides greater dynamic range and colour grading possibilities.
Crucially, the same object recognition available to stills photographers is also available to videographers, so you can track moving objects around the frame, keeping them in sharp focus even when working
Built for professionals.
The EOS R3 is built to withstand the rigours of day-to-day professional use. Its tough, magnesium-alloy body is sealed to the same level as our legendary EOS-1D series cameras, so it can cope against dust and water in tough conditions. Dual card slots allow image files to be written to SD or CFexpress media.
The camera is powered by a high-capacity LP-E19 battery – the same as you’ll find in our EOS-1DX III camera. This ensure the EOS R3 fits in right alongside your existing equipment and can use any spare batteries you already own.
In fact, if you’ve ever used an EOS-1 series camera then many of the EOS R3’s controls will feel very familiar. And if you haven’t, we know you’re going to love the instinctive positioning of its controls and its ergonomic grip.
The camera offers a choice of controls, with both multi controller and smart controller falling instinctively within reach of your thumb for completely intuitive operation. Three customisable dials on the camera, plus a Lens Control ring on each RF mount lens, allow shutter speed, aperture, ISO and exposure compensation all to be easily adjusted with the camera at your eye. The EOS R3 is also equipped with a Vari-Angle screen letting you compose easily from creative perspectives.
Advanced connectivity.
Connectivity is vital for sports and news photographers. The EOS R3 uses its wired LAN socket and 5GHz Wi-Fi3 for communication to talk to computer networks, laptops and mobile devices for fast, easy image sharing. The EOS R3 is also compatible with our Mobile File Transfer app, which lets pro photographers add metadata and transmit images from a smartphone when a Wi-Fi connection is not available.
The EOS R3 features a new accessory shoe that provides data communication and power for its new accessories when attached to the camera.
