Product Features in Detail
20.2 Megapixel Full Frame CMOS Sensor
A 20.2 Megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with high latitude, developed and made by Canon, reduces noise at both high and low ISO speeds. This exceptional sensor features gapless microlenses to ensure high image quality under all shooting conditions. Gapless lenses mean that no light is lost between each pixel as all the light falling on the sensor is funneled into the pixels below. This improves light gathering capacity and increases the signal-to-noise ratio.
With increase in the number of recording pixels, compared to the EOS-1D X, the 20.2 MP in EOS-1D X Mark II enable more cropping abilities while still retaining exceptional level of detail. At the same time, the increased exposure latitude allows compositions to be over and/or under exposed without much loss of details.
High ISO Sensitivity
Speed is of the essence in any professional situation, and greater ISO flexibility is particularly useful when shooting in low-light and near-dark locations. With a top native ISO speed of 51200, the EOS-1D X MARK II can be expanded further still to ISO 409600 for shooting in very dark locations. And flexibility doesn't stop there. Even in Auto ISO mode shutter speeds up to 1/8000sec are possible, as is exposure compensation in Manual mode.
In-camera Lens Aberration Correction
When the original EOS-1D X launched, it included peripheral brightness correction and chromatic aberration correction functions, while a further distortion correction function was included in the EOS 7D Mark II. Evolving these in-camera processing options, the EOS-1D X Mark II includes these along with a new diffraction correction function that is applied to JPEG images during shooting. This function allows photographers to work at smaller apertures without any concerns over image quality degradation caused by diffraction.
Built-in Digital Lens Optimizer
With the EOS-1D X, Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software provided solutions for correcting various lens and image aberrations. On the EOS-1D X Mark II, these correction functions are built into the camera with a dedicated Digital Lens Optimizer function.
Digital Lens Optimizer imitates lens performance, with a series of mathematical functions replicating each stage of the journey of light through the optical path. Using this information, the Digital Lens Optimizer can correct a range of typical optical aberrations and loss of resolution caused by a camera’s low pass filter, by applying an inverse function to each shot to take the image nearer to how the scene appears to the naked eye. This creates detailed, high-quality images providing photographers great flexibility of working with large or small apertures without worrying about aberrations and diffractions.
360k RGB+IR Metering Sensor
The camera has an RGB+IR metering sensor with 360,000 effective pixels (736 x 496 near WVGA resolution). Evaluative metering and evaluative flash metering are based on the information detected by the sensor. The sensor includes IR pixels that detect infrared (IR) light, which helps the EOS Scene Detection System analyse scenes and improve AF precision. The IR pixels, together with the RGB pixels are also used to detect brightness, colour and faces in a scene. In addition to taking distance information into account, the algorithm recognises a subject based on face detection and colour information.
The metering sensor is supported by a dedicated DIGIC 6 processor, which processes all the colour information and face detection data to recognise shooting subjects with outstanding accuracy.
EOS iTR System
The face detection and colour tracking abilities of the 360,000 pixel RGB+IR sensor are passed onto the EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition system. On the EOS-1D X MARK II, EOS iTR AF includes the improved algorithms found on the EOS 7D Mark II that greatly enhance the overall subject tracking performance.
In addition to face priority mode, a subject tracking mode has been added for moments when a face is not always visible, and when the main subject is not a person.
AI Servo AF III+
Canon’s AI servo AF III+ features an AF algorithm that, along with the EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition (EOS iTR) system, improves the tracking sensitivity in scenes where subject movements may occur suddenly, delivering precise and accurate focusing even in situations where focusing is difficult.
61-point Expanded Autofocus Area
Increasing the area covered by the AF points is a much requested feature by photographers, be they professional or amateur. In the EOS-1D X Mark II, the AF points have been placed over a wider area – an 8 percent more vertical expansion in the central area, and 24 percent more vertical expansion in the peripheral area – giving greater freedom in where subjects can be placed when composing.
41 cross-type and 5 dual cross-type AF points further extend the reach of the EOS-1D X Mark II’s focus capabilities. Cross type AF points provide greater autofocus precision over a wider area of the frame ensuring correct focus, important for fast moving subjects. All 61 AF and 41 cross-type AF points are individually selectable.
14 fps with Full AF/AE Tracking, 16 fps in Live View Shooting
Professional photographers never get a second chance. Therefore increasing the chances of capturing decisive moments like a goal celebration or crossing the finish line, and capturing them accurately with superb sharpness are primary concerns. Canon engineers recognise this and have achieved a maximum mirror drive speed of 14 fps1 with full AF/AE tracking.
Dual "DIGIC 6+" Processors
For the 20.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor to perform the high-speed signal readout, the EOS-1D X Mark II uses a front-end processing circuit together with the Dual “DIGIC 6+” processors for high-speed signal processing. The incredible power of these processors enables increased latitude, improved noise reduction at both high and low ISO range, renders images with the natural skin tones Canon is known for, applies various lens corrections in real time to JPEG images even when shooting at approx. 16 fps in Live View and records movies at DCI 4K up to 60 fps or in Full HD up to 120 fps.
CFast 2.0™ Media
EOS-1D X Mark II is the first EOS stills camera to feature a CFast 2.0™ card slot in addition to CompactFlash card slot. CFast 2.0™ is similar in size to CompactFlash but has recessed contacts making the card more robust and less likely to suffer issues related to bent pins. CFast 2.0™ currently has a write speed of up to 440MB/s, which is three times faster than the fastest CompactFlash (150 MB/s). Such fast write speeds allow a continuous RAW shooting burst of 170 full resolution images. Additionally, exFAT format support2 removes the 4 GB file size limitation, doing away with the necessity to merge files when recording movies.
High Resolution Touch-panel LCD Screen
High quality photographs from the EOS-1D X Mark II should be seen on a high-quality LCD monitor the moment they are taken. To make this possible, EOS-1D X Mark II features the Clear View LCD II with an aspect ratio of 3:2 and an unchanged 3.2-inch monitor size. The pixel density of the screen has been increased by approximately 1.25 x, with the number of dots increased to 1.62 million when compared to the EOS-1D X
Intelligent Viewfinder II
As a professional the last thing you want to do is take your eye off the action. Time spent away from the viewfinder risks missing a crucial moment, which is why Canon engineers have listened carefully to feedback from the EOS community and brought more information to the EOS-1D X Mark II viewfinder, which can be customised to suit the needs of the photographer. It is now easy to change settings and check camera status without removing your eye from the viewfinder.
Dual Axis Electronic Level
A Dual Axis Electronic Level helps photographers to keep the camera level when shooting – a bonus when striving for straight horizons, or when shooting architecture. Both pitch (forward-backward) and roll (side-to-side) movement is detected in 1˚ increments, and the level is shown both in the viewfinder (above the focusing points) and on the LCD screen, making it a useful tool at night when reference points are hard to see in the viewfinder.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF is a sensor-based, phase detection Auto Focus (AF) technology designed to provide smooth, high-performance focus tracking in movies and fast autofocus acquisition when shooting still photos in Live View mode. A Canon-developed technology, it is ideal for creating professional-looking pull-focus effects and keeping a subject moving towards the user in sharp focus while maintaining a blurred background – a defining characteristic of EOS Movies.
Incredible EOS 4K 60p Movies
Canon’s heritage in DSLR movies culminates in the EOS-1D X Mark II, giving film and documentary makers the option of shooting their stories in stunning 4K resolution and in a variety of frame rates. 4K movies are recorded internally in DCI 4K standard at 4096 x 2160 (17:9 ratio) at native resolution on the sensor for ultimate sharpness and quality.
Built-in GPS
EOS-1D X Mark II offers built in satellite connectivity for GPS (USA), GLONASS (Russia) and Quasi-Zenith Satellite Michibiki (Japan) global positioning satellites for improved GPS accuracy and quick signal acquisition1. The camera will add Geotag information (longitude, latitude, elevation, plus Coordinated Universal Time) to the image metadata, a useful extra for agencies and photographers seeking to identify automatically when and where images were taken.
High-Speed Connectivity
The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 terminal enables high-speed image transfer to a computer. EOS-1D X Mark II, like the EOS-1D X, also offers photographers the ability to transmit images over a network via a built-in Ethernet socket or via an optional WFT-E8 or WFT-E6 wireless transmitter.
