Canon's grip on the entry-level digital SLR camera market has been secure since they first appeared but has recently been under attack from competition in form of the excellent Pentax K10D and Nikon D40X. On release, the EOS 400D raised the bar for entry-level dSLRs with its 10.1 megapixel resolution sensor, but Pentax and Nikon were quick to counter with equal if not better spec'd models of their own.
Whilst the Canon 400D remains a popular choice, our recommendation would be to consider the alternatives unless you have existing Canon EF/EF-S lenses or other investments in this brand. This is particularly true if you're purchasing a lens kit. The basic Canon kit lenses might get you started, but you're likely to be back for an upgrade before long.
