Canon's digital video recorders below.
Digital video recorders come in three main formats:
- MiniDV - this is a tape-based medium; the small tapes are typically 60 minutes in duration (longer durations are available); MiniDV is the regular choice of the professional or serious hobbyist videographer
- HDD (Hard Disk Drive) - these digital video cameras have built-in hard-drives, like your computer, which allow large amounts of video storage on the camera; the larger the HDD, the more video you can store, but this is fixed, so, once it's full, you need to delete to record more
- DVD - a more recent recording medium, digital video recorders that record straight to DVD are a very popular choice because of their low cost.
Also look out for the AVCHD standard when choosing. AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) allows greater compression of the video without loss of quality, meaning you can store more in the same amount of space (whatever the storage media).
